Salcombe Regis
The picturesque village of Salcombe Regis, 1.5 miles east of Sidmouth and less than a mile from the sea, is surrounded by rolling hills, farmland and the most beautiful walks along the coastal paths. The pretty village, nestling at the foot of soldiers hill, is dominated by the lovely Norman Church of St. Marys & St. Peter. The name 'Salcombe' is derived from the salt works that used to exist at the mouth of the combe and 'Regis' commemorates the manor having been granted to the monastery in Exeter by King Athelstan (925-940).The manor house site is on Thorn Farm at the high north end of the village, above which stands the Salcombe thorn. A thorn tree has been maintained here since Saxon times and originally marked the boundary between the cultivated fields of the combe and the common land beyond.
